How to Turn PDF Pages into JPG or PNG Images

Sometimes a page works better as a picture than as a PDF: to show it in a WhatsApp chat, drop it onto a slide, or upload it to a form that only takes images. Converting takes seconds. The two choices that matter are the format, PNG or JPG, and the resolution.
When an image is better than a PDF, and when it isn't
Images open instantly in chat apps, preview in email without a separate viewer, and can be placed, cropped and resized in PowerPoint, Google Slides or Canva like any photo. Some upload forms accept only JPG or PNG, even for documents.
An image is the worse choice when the reader needs to search or copy the text, click links, or print a long document. Converting turns everything on the page into pixels, so the text is no longer text. For contracts and anything with many pages, send the PDF.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: every pixel is saved exactly. That keeps text, tables, lines and diagrams crisp, with no smudging around letters. It's the right choice for typed documents, forms, spreadsheets and charts.
JPG is lossy: it discards fine detail to make the file much smaller. That suits pages that are mostly photos, such as brochures, menus or colour scans. At the quality our tool uses (92%), text looks fine at normal size, but if you zoom right in you may see faint speckles around the edges of letters.
A simple rule: text and graphics go to PNG, photos and scans go to JPG, and if a form names a format, use that one. In a scanned PDF, each page is usually already stored as a compressed photo, so choosing PNG gives a bigger file without adding any detail. There's more on the differences in JPG vs PNG vs WebP.
Choosing the resolution
PDF pages are measured in points, and there are 72 points to an inch. An A4 page is about 595 × 842 points; US Letter is 612 × 792. In our PDF to Images tool, the Scale setting decides how many pixels each point becomes:

A higher scale means sharper text and bigger files. If the page has footnotes or fine print, use 2. For professional printing you'd normally want around 300 ppi, which for A4 is about 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. Our tool doesn't go that high, so for print, send the PDF itself or export from the program that created it.
How to convert a PDF with SAA Tool
- Open PDF to Images and drop your PDF on the box, or click Browse.
- Choose the Format (PNG or JPG) and the Scale (1, 1.5 or 2).
- Click Convert. A Download page button appears for each page, and the files are named
SAA-Tool-page-1.png,SAA-Tool-page-2.pngand so on.
The conversion runs in your browser with PDF.js, the PDF viewer built into Firefox, so your document isn't uploaded. Some honest limits: the tool converts every page and gives one button per page rather than a ZIP, so for a long PDF it's quicker to pull out the pages you need first with Split PDF. Password-protected PDFs won't open until the password is removed. Long documents at scale 2 can take a while on older phones.
Making the images smaller
An A4 page at scale 2 is around 1,191 pixels wide, which is more than many uses need. Two tools help:
- The Image Compressor reduces file size with a Quality slider and an optional Max width. It saves as JPG or WebP, so a PNG comes out in one of those formats. Check that the place you're uploading to accepts WebP before choosing it.
- The Image Resizer sets an exact width and height in pixels and keeps the original format, so a PNG stays a PNG.
For example, if a form wants a JPG under 500 KB and your page is a PNG, run it through the Image Compressor with Save as set to JPG, Max width at 1024 and Quality around 75, then check the compressed size it shows. Our guide to resizing and compressing images goes through this in more detail.
Sharing a page on WhatsApp or putting it in slides
WhatsApp. When you send a picture as a photo, WhatsApp resizes and recompresses it, which can make small text soft. The HD option helps. If the page must arrive exactly as it is, send the image through the Document option instead: it goes as a file, untouched, and the other person taps to open it.
PowerPoint and Google Slides. In PowerPoint, use Insert > Pictures > This Device. In Google Slides, use Insert > Image > Upload from computer. Scale 2 works well here: a slide shown full screen on a 1920 × 1080 display is 1,080 pixels tall, so a page 1,684 pixels tall gets scaled down and stays crisp.
If you only need part of a page, such as one table, a screenshot is quicker: press Windows key + Shift + S on Windows or Cmd + Shift + 4 on a Mac and drag around the area.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the image file bigger than the PDF?
A PDF stores text as characters and shapes, which take very little space. An image stores every pixel of the page, so a text-heavy page is usually larger as an image, especially as a PNG.
Can I convert just one page?
The tool converts all pages, but you only need to download the one you want. For long files, extract that page with Split PDF first so the conversion is quicker.
Will the text in the image be searchable or editable?
No. Once the page is an image, the text is part of the picture. To edit it, go back to the original document. Our tools don't do text recognition (OCR).
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The pages are drawn and saved inside your browser, and the images download straight to your device.
