How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words? Pages, Reading Time and Speaking Time

Short answer: in a 12 pt font with normal margins, 1,000 words fills about 1.3 to 1.5 pages single-spaced and about 2.6 to 3 pages double-spaced. It takes about 4 minutes to read silently and roughly 6½ to 8 minutes to say out loud. The popular rule of 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 double-spaced overstates the page count for Times New Roman or Arial. Here are tested figures, sourced reading and speaking speeds, and how to check your own text.

Why there's no single answer

A page count depends on how many words fit on a line and how many lines fit on a page. Five things change that:

  • Font. Fonts of the same point size differ in width. In our test, Arial 12 pt fitted about 9% fewer words per page than Times New Roman 12 pt.
  • Size. Dropping Arial from 12 pt to 11 pt fitted about 21% more words on each page.
  • Line spacing. Double spacing halves the lines per page, so it roughly doubles the page count.
  • Paper and margins. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is the standard in most countries; US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) is the norm in the US and Canada. With 2.5 cm margins on A4 and 1 inch on Letter, A4's text area is narrower but taller, and holds about 5% more text.
  • Layout and vocabulary. Paragraph breaks, headings, lists, a title block and long technical words all reduce what fits. In our test, a 12 pt gap after every paragraph cut a single-spaced Times New Roman page from about 760 words to about 690.

Pages for 1,000 words: tested figures

We set the same 10,000 words of plain English prose in LibreOffice Writer, exported each version to PDF and counted the words on the full pages. The text ran in left-aligned paragraphs of 125 words, with no headings and no extra space between paragraphs, in fonts built to match the character widths of Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Courier New. A4 had 2.5 cm margins and Letter 1 inch. Single spacing is the font's own line height, about 1.15 times the point size.

Font, size and spacingA4 pagesUS Letter pages
Times New Roman 12 pt, singleabout 1.3about 1.4
Times New Roman 12 pt, 1.5 linesabout 1.9about 2.0
Times New Roman 12 pt, doubleabout 2.6about 2.8
Arial 12 pt, singleabout 1.4about 1.5
Arial 12 pt, doubleabout 2.9about 3.0
Calibri 11 pt, doubleabout 2.3about 2.5
Courier New 12 pt, doubleabout 3.7about 3.9

Treat these as approximate. Solid prose is close to the most a page can hold, so an essay with a title, headings or gaps between paragraphs usually runs longer. In words per page, single-spaced Times New Roman 12 pt held about 760 on A4 and 725 on Letter; double-spaced, about 380 and 360.

So where does the 500 and 250 rule come from? It fits typewriter-style Courier, which gives every character the same width: 10 characters per inch at 12 pt. In our test, Courier New 12 pt held about 500 to 525 words per page single-spaced and 255 to 265 double-spaced.

If you're writing to a page count, check the required format first. APA style, for example, asks for double spacing and 1 inch margins on US Letter paper, and accepts fonts such as 12 pt Times New Roman, 11 pt Calibri and 11 pt Arial, according to Purdue University's Online Writing Lab. Those three choices alone give about 2.5 to 2.8 pages for the same 1,000 words.

Reading time and speaking time

The most thorough evidence on reading speed is a 2019 review by Marc Brysbaert of Ghent University, which pooled 190 studies with 18,573 participants. It puts the average silent reading rate of adults in English at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, and reading aloud at 183 words per minute. Rates are lower for children, older adults and people reading in a second language. As the British Psychological Society's Research Digest pointed out, that's well below the commonly cited 300 words per minute.

For speech, NCVS, a voice research centre at the University of Iowa, gives about 150 words per minute as the average rate for English speakers in the US, and Brysbaert notes that audiobooks are spoken at 140 to 180. A talk has pauses, slides and questions, so our Reading Time Calculator plans speaking time at a slower 130 words per minute. That's our planning choice, not a research average, so time a practice run.

Examples: 500 to 5,000 words

WordsSingle-spaced pagesDouble-spaced pagesSilent reading (238 wpm)Speaking (130 wpm)
500about 0.71.3 to 1.42 min 6 sec3 min 51 sec
1,0001.3 to 1.42.6 to 2.84 min 12 sec7 min 42 sec
2,0002.6 to 2.85.2 to 5.68 min 24 sec15 min 23 sec
5,0006.6 to 6.913 to 1421 min 1 sec38 min 28 sec

Pages are for Times New Roman 12 pt, A4 to Letter, as tested above. Times are exactly what our Reading Time Calculator shows. At 150 words per minute, 1,000 words takes 6 min 40 sec. Working backwards for a talk, 10 minutes is 1,300 words at 130 words per minute, or 1,500 at 150.

How word counters count

Our Word Counter and Reading Time Calculator count a word as anything between spaces, tabs or line breaks, so hyphenated words, numbers such as 1,000, prices and web addresses are one word each. Our guide to word and character limits covers those, plus characters, emoji and SMS. A few more cases:

  • Numbers grouped with spaces count as separate words: 10 000 is two words and 1 000 000 is three, even with non-breaking spaces.
  • A number and its unit, or a time, count as two: 5 km and 9:30 am. Written as 5km, it's one.
  • Abbreviations with full stops, such as e.g. and a.m., count as one word each.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Thai don't put spaces between words, so a whole sentence can count as one word. Use the Character Counter for those languages.

The two tools estimate reading time differently: the Word Counter divides by 200 words per minute and rounds up, so 1,000 words shows 5 min, while the Reading Time Calculator defaults to 238 and shows 4 min 12 sec. Word processors have their own counting rules, so totals can differ by a few words. If a limit is strict, go by the tool your school or publisher names.

How to check your text with our tools

  1. Paste your text into the Word Counter. Words, Characters, Without spaces, Sentences and Reading time update as you type. Copy text and Clear sit above the box.
  2. Estimate pages by dividing the word count by the words per page for your settings. For example, 1,800 words double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt on A4 is about 1,800 ÷ 380 = 4.7 pages. For an exact count, set the required format in your word processor and look at its page total.
  3. Open the Reading Time Calculator and paste the same text, or type the number into Or type a word count. Choose a Reading speed: Slow or careful (150 wpm), Average adult (238 wpm), Fast or skimming (300 wpm) or Custom, which opens a Words per minute box.
  4. Read the Reading time, the Speaking time and the Blog label, such as "4 min read" for 1,000 words. Speaking time always uses 130 words per minute. To plan a talk at your own pace, read a one-minute stretch aloud, count the words, enter that number under Custom and read the Reading time row as your speaking time.
  5. If a form or post sets a character limit instead, paste the text into the Character Counter.

All three tools run in your browser, so your text isn't uploaded.
