About Currency Converter
Converts an amount between more than 160 currencies using the day's reference rates, and shows the same sum in up to 14 widely used currencies below. That makes it quick to compare prices while travelling, shopping from abroad or checking an invoice in another currency. The rate is given both ways, with the time it was published. From starts on your usual currency, based on your device's time zone or your last choice on the site, and rates are reused for six hours.
How to use Currency Converter
- Type the Amount you want to convert, for example 250 or 99.50.
- Pick the From and To currencies. Popular ones are listed first, then every currency from A to Z.
- Read the converted amount, the rate in both directions and when the rates were last updated.
- Click ⇄ Swap to turn the pair round, and scroll down to see the amount in other popular currencies.
How your data is handled
Your browser downloads the day's rate table directly from ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com) and does the conversion itself. The amount and currencies you choose are never sent. A copy of the table is saved in your browser's local storage and reused for six hours.
Limits and accuracy
- Results are estimates, not financial advice. Banks, cards and exchange shops add margins and fees, so you'll usually get a little less.
- Rates are updated about once a day, so they won't follow fast market moves and aren't suitable for trading.
- For a few currencies, such as ARS, VES and ZWL, official rates and the rates people actually get can differ widely.
- It needs an internet connection to load rates, unless your browser saved a copy in the last six hours.
Questions and answers
Where do the exchange rates come from?
They're daily reference rates from ExchangeRate-API, loaded from its open.er-api.com service. The data refreshes about once every 24 hours, and the result shows exactly when the rates you're using were last updated.
Why is my bank's rate different?
These are reference rates with nothing added. Banks, card issuers and exchange shops add their own margin to the rate and sometimes a fixed fee, so the amount you actually receive is usually a little lower than shown here.
What does the Inverse rate mean?
It's the same rate the other way round: how much one unit of the To currency is worth in the From currency. If 1 USD were 0.90 EUR, the inverse would be about 1.11 USD for each euro.
Does it work offline?
Partly. Once the rates have loaded, your browser keeps them for six hours, so conversions still work if your connection drops. After that the page needs to download fresh rates and shows an error if it can't.
Is the amount I type sent anywhere?
No. Your browser downloads the whole rate table and does the maths on your device, so the amount and the currencies you pick are never sent to us or to the rate provider.
