Slug Generator
Free online Slug Generator. No sign-up needed, and it runs in your browser.
Turn a title into a clean URL slug — lower case, hyphens, no accents or symbols. One title or a whole list at once.
About Slug Generator
Bloggers, shop owners and developers use it to turn page titles, product names or headings into the short, readable part of a web address. Paste a whole list and each line gets its own slug, which saves time when setting up many pages at once. It swaps & for and, drops apostrophes and symbols, and can shorten long titles, usually without chopping a word in half.
How to use Slug Generator
- Type or paste a title into Titles (one per line), or paste a whole list with one title on each line.
- Choose a Separator, Hyphen or Underscore, and a Maximum length of 50, 60 or 75 characters, or No limit.
- Tick or untick Change accents to plain letters, Leave out small words and Keep capital letters.
- Check the Slug box and, for a single title, the preview with Your site, then click Copy or Download.
How your data is handled
Slugs are made in your browser. Your titles aren't uploaded or stored, and the site address you type is only used to show the preview on the page.
Limits and accuracy
- Leave out small words uses a short English list, and it only applies when the title has more than two words.
- With Change accents ticked, letters that have no plain Latin form, such as Arabic, Hindi or Chinese, are left out; untick it to keep them.
- It doesn't know which slugs your site already uses, so two identical titles give two identical slugs.
Questions and answers
Should I use hyphens or underscores in a slug?
Hyphens, in most cases. Google recommends hyphens because they help people and search engines see where one word ends and the next begins. Choose Underscore only if your system or file naming rules need it.
What happens to accents and letters from other alphabets?
With Change accents to plain letters ticked, é becomes e, ß becomes ss and æ becomes ae, and anything outside plain A to Z and 0 to 9 is dropped. Untick it to keep letters such as Arabic, Greek, Cyrillic or Hindi in the slug.
Does Maximum length cut words in half?
Usually not. The slug is trimmed to the limit and then shortened back to the last whole word. Only when that would lose more than half the length, for example with one very long word, is it cut at the exact limit.
